Couch Surfing

I’m headed to South Carolina next week for a photography workshop given by Shane Snider.  Shane is well known in the wedding photography industry and I’m really looking forward to learning from him (check out his work, you won’t be disappointed). It’s going to be an intense 3 days, but this is an amazing opportunity to learn from one of the best.

Anyways, I’ll be in South Carolina without the family for 4 nights and the thought of staying at a hotel just didn’t sound like fun.  A few weeks back I had read an article in the local newspaper about couch surfing.  As I was debating on where to stay during my trip I thought about the couch surfing article.  For those of you who don’t know couch surfing is basically staying with someone that you don’t know and sleeping on their couch.  You find couch surfing availability through the website and email the individual and ask if you can stay.  The cool thing about couch surfing is that you get an inside look at the area you are visiting, plus you get to meet some really cool people.  You don’t just see the place as a tourist, but as a local.  I went ahead and emailed about 10 Charleston people and heard back from 3 that were available to host (a 4th politely declined because they were going to be out of town). I made arrangements with the first two that replied and will be spending a couple nights on strangers couches.  I’m really looking forward to it.  I’ve spoken to both of my hosts (Jessica and Lindsay) and they sound like a lot of fun, plus they have both traveled extensively and I’m really looking forward to hearing their travel stories.  I’ll be posting an update to this experience when I return.  Make sure you check back to read about my real life couch surfing experience.

Down on the Farm: Cadillac, MI

I braved the freezing cold temps yesterday and headed outside to get some winter farm photos. This is a project I’m working on for a local kitchen store that is adding a “buy fresh and local” component to their store. I think buying local is a great idea and the thought of having access to local fresh food year round is a bonus.

Here’s a few things that caught my eye as we were driving around.

Emma spotted this deer on the frozen creek. She has good eyes for spotting wildlife:

WINTER: Cadillac, MI Photos

Today we had a break in the cold temps and it got up to a whole 18 degrees. Since the weather was so nice I decided to go out and take some photos. It was pretty cloudy at times, but this is northern Michigan….pretty…as long as you’re someplace warm :)

The sun went behind the clouds right when I took these photos.

The sun peaked out a bit here

Just for fun:

Backyard Snapshots

Thought I’d share what our backyard looks like in the middle of winter. It’s so, just, bland. Of course, we have a wonderful view of Wal-Mart…still slightly irritated that they mowed down all the trees and moved in. We do have our guilty little pleasure, aka our hot tub, in the backyard as well. We really enjoy using it in the winter. It’s ccccold getting out to it, but it’s so nice. It’s really an experience to have big fluffy snowflakes coming down while you’re sitting in it and the stars at night, what few we can see, are amazing. One day, we’ll live away from all the commercial lights and really be able to enjoy the stars.

Alan is ALWAYS fussing with the chemicals and such for the hot tub and now I have proof :) Oh, do you see that pink board on the deck behind Alan? That’s our ghetto hot tub cover. Two pieces of styrofoam type insulation topped with a big ‘ole tarp. I know, I know…ghetto, but it really works well. Some day soon here we’ll actually get a “real” cover. :)

Huh, these photos make it look really small, but it really is a decent size hot tub. It will be even better to sit in this during the spring when it’s not quite so cold.
